MacBook Pro A1707 Turns On But Has No Display

A MacBook Pro came in with a completely black screen. It looked like a dead LCD or a logic board fault, but the machine was clearly alive.

Symptoms

• MacBook turns on but the screen stays black
• Amp meter shows the laptop drawing power and switching on
• LCD is not physically cracked or damaged
• The display came back at one specific lid angle

Diagnosis: Why the Amp Meter Matters

Before replacing anything, we checked power consumption with an amp meter. That confirmed the MacBook was actually booting, so the logic board was likely fine. Then we carefully moved the lid up and down, and the display suddenly came back at a certain angle. That pointed to a damaged display flex cable, commonly known as Flexgate.

What Is Flexgate?

The display flex cable bends every time you open and close the MacBook. Over time it can crack, causing:

• Black screen but the laptop is on
• Screen only working at certain angles
• Flickering or cutting out
• Backlight not working

The Fault: Cracked Display Flex Cable

Under the microscope we found a small crack in the flex cable, which confirmed the diagnosis.

The Repair: Donor Flex Cable Microsoldering

Instead of replacing the whole LCD assembly, we took a matching flex cable section from another faulty MacBook LCD, aligned it under the microscope and microsoldered it onto the damaged cable. After testing, the display worked properly again.

Takeaway

If your MacBook turns on but shows no display, or the screen only works at a certain angle, don't assume the LCD or logic board is dead. Check the display flex cable first.
